The unique energy Necromancers have at their disposal is Essence, which is generated by killing or damaging enemies with their basic attacks. For this reason, the Necromancer is an excellent class for beginners or those who want to play solo, but this class can struggle against lengthy boss battles if you're unable to replenish your Minions with fresh summons (as it relies on corpses being available). Other version listed within a build will be if you don't have a certain set yet and usually the final build depends on a set to make the skills + devotion tree optimal. These Minions deal damage independently of the Necromancer and can attract the attention (or aggro) of enemies, giving the Necromancer freedom to stay healthy and provide additional damage, support buffs, and more. Usually heavy on the vendor gear / craft-able. this is going to be skill + devotion + gear combo you can get without much/if any farming. On picking a first build you should look in these threads for the budget version. On the gear shown I mostly ignore the gear and go with whatever I have found and obviously prioritize pets/useful stats, but not going to go farm things to level with. Believe there is an end game skeleton build too, but generally they fall off/die too quick to be useful in hard fights, so you move on to just the beefy pets. Use the Necro 1-100 skills if you want to start skeletons and jump right into the necro fantasy (customize that path a little to pick up occultist curse of frailty and it should feel a lot like d2 skellies and that amp damage curse). On the version i have you would look at Cabalist 1 – 100 (page 57) or Necromancer 1 – 100 (page 53) for what to prioritize skill wise in the early game. You may have noticed Maya put together all these builds and there is now a good leveling portion for starting out most if not all the pet classes/combos: The conjurer is maybe easier/stronger first character, but it is not a necromancy, so you might want to go cabalist (necro+occultist). Released in 2016, it currently has two expansions: Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods. This ARPG features complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting and quests with choice & consequence.
